Why, hello there, journal.
Today was my eighteenth birthday, and in the Swedish tradition, my host family woke me with their singing and entered my room bearing some lovely gifts. I received a book entitled “A Scent of Sweden” which contains plenty of facts and figures about the country as well as a few recipes, plus a Kent album and some fridge magnets with Swedish words printed on them so that we can form sentances on the kylskåp.
My sister, Kate, had also sent me a nice bracelet and card — thanks Kate!
Later on, at school, some of my lovely new classmates had planned a little surprise during the last class of the afternoon. There were plenty of balloons, cake and some saft.
After getting off the bus on the way home from school, we (three exchange students and two 'locals') had a little snowfight, as it had been snowing all day.
In the evening, my host mother cooked everyone's favourite dish (delicious chicken and pasta) for dinner, which was followed by more birthday cake.
Also, Amanda called tonight to wish me a happy birthday, and it was rather nice to talk to her.
So, I had a pretty good day.
On Saturday I went to Gothenburg to meet (yet another) Gustav, who had broken his leg skiing and couldn't really go too far. He has similar (computing) interests to me, so we sat and chatted for a while, along with another friend of his. Gustav was having friends around because he'd also turned eighteen recently, so I stayed and had dinner before watching a video with everyone. There were some pretty interesting people there, who I shall probably meet with again a few times throughout the year.
I'm sure I'm forgetting something. Oh well.
