Sick and tired…

February 6th, 2001

Apologies to my loyal followers for my slackness in updating, but I haven't been feeling the best — very tired and not sleeping so well. I'm having the day off school to rest, because I don't want to risk being sick when we go skiing next week. But never mind that, on with the show…

Last Thursday, my host father and brothers took me along to see an ice hockey match at the Scandinavium in Gothenburg — Frölunda vs AIK. It had sounded strange to them that I had never been to a game of ice hockey before. My host father is a loyal AIK fan, while Markus and Gustav are strong supports of Frölunda, and the match was very important for getting into the play-offs. The game was quite one-sided, and until the last few seconds Frölunda were ahead 2-0. Practically right on the buzzer, AIK scored a little sympathy goal.
On an unrelated note, someone had been killed with an axe just outside the Scandinavium at 8:30am that morning.

Then, on Friday night, a couple of Markus' friends (one is also hosting an Australian exchange student, who followed along) came around to play Goldeneye on the Nintendo64. I joined in until around 5am, after which it had started to become a little monotonous. Görel wasn't very impressed to find the others still going for it at 6am, with Courtney asleep on the lounge, when she got up for breakfast. So that was a brilliant way to spend a Friday night.

Amy, the exchange student from New Zealand, had a birthday party on Saturday night. I went along to that with Courtney, after having dinner with her host family. The walk there was extremely cold, and there wasn't a great deal of people there when we arrived, but we had a fun evening. We also learned that Swedes can play some very weird (and potentially quite boring) drinking games. Courtney and I were quite antisocial and played cards for a lot of the time, until walking home at around 3am, scared of being frozen to death.

As I have mentioned, it's been quite cold. Here it has been to around -15 degrees Celsius, which, coupled with high humidity and winds, can become quite painful. This is a good thing, though, considering we are going skiing (or snowboarding, rather) in Ramundberget next week, where it has been below -30 degrees. It hasn't been snowing a great deal though, until last night and today, but it is warming up now and is about -3 degrees. They're also predicting temperatures on the other side of zero in the next few days, which will turn all the nice snow into horrid slush.

I'm still having problems with my e-mail, but thanks to all those who have mailed me, and I'll get back to you as soon as everything gets sorted out. I'm also having a bit of trouble with the software for my digital camera, but with a bit of luck that shan't be too difficult to sort out. So, until next time…
