Churches and castles everywhere
August 12th, 2001It seems I never got around to writing about what we did during our last week in Denmark. So, this is what we did… (I might write a bit more about individual things as I put the photos up)
On the Monday, we drove across the approximately 8km long bridge from Denmark to Malmö in the south of Sweden. We went on a canal tour, walked around for ages, took the bus to Lund to see the cathedral and walk around for a while there too.
The next day we split up into groups and ours rode to two different castles to have a look around (about 20km of riding in total). The second castle was the one the queen lives in during spring and autumn…
On Wednesday we went into Copenhagen to see the statue of The Little Mermaid, the huge cathedral, the royal families' castles and the changing of the guards there. We split into groups again and we went to Christiania, a “free city” that is like a separate country within Copenhagen and not part of the EU. It was like going to the markets, except they sold drugs and associated items at half of the stalls. I thought it was a bit exaggerated in some cases, like a show for tourists instead of an “alternative lifestyle.”
Our group then continued onto the Experimentarium, a 'science centre' and spent a couple of hours there.
We had most of Thursday to ourselves after a canal tour around Copenhagen, so we went to places our mothers probably wouldn't like us to see. In the evening, we went to Tivoli, an amusement park (that I didn't find too amusing) in the city. There we met a lot of the Danes that were with us for the first two weeks at the school, and that feeling of departure was returning.
Everything came to an end on Friday with the Americans and Italians leaving on a jetplane, and I caught the train with some of the YFU people from the airport and got off at Copenhagen Central. I had to wait a couple of hours for my train so I just wandered around the city and ate some very Danish food at Burger King.
